Meet the Maxum Brazilian Jiu Jitsu & MMA team of Instructors, led by head instructors and founders Joe Monahan and Alex Aristides.
Joe Monahan, Maxum Brazilian Jiu Jitsu head instructor and founder. Joe is a BJJ black belt currently under Matt and Nick Serra (Team Serra). As well as a 1st grade homicide detective with the NYPD. Joe started out learning martial arts as a child and has studied multiple styles over the years such as Japanese Jiu Jitsu, and kickboxing. He then began training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Joe has conducted many self defense, tactics and rape prevention clinics for the NYPD. He has won multiple grappling tournaments in the united states. Also assists the United States Army in BJJ training. Joe still currently trains at the Serra academy.
Alex Aristides, Maxum Brazilian Jiu Jitsu head instructor and founder. Alex is a BJJ black belt currently under Matt and Nick Serra (Team Serra). Alex started out learning martial arts as a teenager. Studying multiple styles over the years such as Japanese Jiu Jitsu, judo and kickboxing. Then began training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He has won and placed in a number of grappling tournaments and other matches over the years such as No Gi Worlds (Mundial's), No Gi Pan American, medalist, As well as other IBJJ Federation Opens, Grapplersquest and more. Alex still competes consistantly in gi and no gi around the country as black belt. He has competed around the United States and in Brazil. Also assists the United States Army in BJJ training. Alex still currently trains at the Serra academy and competes under Team Serra.
Nick Marrone, Maxum Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instructor. Nick is a BJJ black belt under Maxum. Pan Am finalist, World (Mundial) finalist and countless other BJJ tournament victories.
Shawn Gastaldo, Maxum Kick Boxing instructor. He's also a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Maxum, former MMA fighter, Pan Am bronze medalist for BJJ and has competed in other events as well.
Izzy Medina, Maxum's lead wrestling instructor. Junior College All-American Wrestler, All State, County Champ, 9 year head Coach at SUNY Maritime and Coached Wantagh High School to state title. Currently coaching West-Babylon high school. 2 time Nassau County assistant coach of the year. 3 time Pan Am brazilian jiu jitsu gold medalist, and other bJJ tournaments with over two decades of coaching experience.
Zac LeCates is our lead childrens instructor and professional BJJ competitor. He is an accomplished fitness trainer and nationally ranked martial artist since age 12. With multiple gold medals across his career and many more to come. Zac is also the owner operator of EliteTrainingLI a local speed and agility school base on Long Island NY.

George Ruf, one of Maxum's assistant instructors for the children's class. George is currently a purple belt and has been training at Maxum for several years. He is a level 2 instructor for the Army's combatives program (MACP) and has competed in and refereed Army competitions. He has completed tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan and is currently an NYPD officer.
Lennox Chance is a seven time champion and holds US KBA and WKA titles. Lennox has fought from Canada to England, as well as all over the United States. He has fought on several big shows, such as M:1 Global, Road to Glory, Ring of Combat, etc. Lennox trains with world champion Tommy “Bee” Bottone at AFC Kickboxing, where he keeps his stand up skills sharp.
